Philosophy

Dr. Maria MontessoriDr. Maria Montessori was born in Ancona, Italy in 1870 and died in Noordwijk, The Netherlands in 1952. When asked, “What is the Montessori Method?” Maria Montessori would reply, “It is simply an assist to life”. In her work with children throughout the world, Dr. Montessori, the first woman physician in Italy, made certain observations about the young child as they move toward “normalization” which allows the child to joyfully develop inner discipline, self-assurance and preference for purposeful activity.

Dr. Maria Montessori noted that the young child learns with great ease simply by “absorbing” like a sponge that to which she or he is exposed, rather than learning primary through logical analysis.

The sensitive periods or developmental stages are the periods during which the energy of the child’s total being seems to focus upon a particular stage of development such as walking, talking, writing, and reading. If the stages are supported by the learning environment prepared by the teacher and parent, then the learning is fully perfected and easily accomplished by the child.

The prepared environment, scientifically designed to support the sensitive period of the child, is one of the main teachers from which the child learns as they work at their own individual rhythm. Areas of the prepared environment include:

  • Practical Life – For developing concentration and coordination
  • Sensorial – To sort the impressions of the senses
  • Math – To develop the logical mind.
  • Language – To link the child with society
  • Science and Nature – To learn about the wonders of the world from botany to zoology
  • Geography and History – To study the history and the cultures of the world.
  • Music, Art and Movement – To express the inner life
  • Physical Education – To learn cooperation, and to develop gross motor skills

Affiliations

Green House Montessori School is affiliated with the American Montessori Society (AMS) and the Michigan Montessori Society (MMS). Teachers are Montessori certified and are extremely knowledgeable and experienced. The assistant teachers are Montessori trained.

Our Family

Parents often wonder about their role in providing a learning environment in their home and ways to support their child’s school. Parent, teacher, and school relationships are very important in a student’s life. An alliance based on mutual respect and support will enhance all individuals’ understanding, knowledge, and insight and offer a cohesive, prepared learning environment. We offer Parent Education meetings to become informed and knowledgeable about the Montessori philosophy, method and materials. Informed parents communicate better with the teachers by attending planned parent/teacher conferences to share insights, questions and observations and other parent activities, like mother’s and father’s nights, fieldtrips, end of the year performance, by reading the school’s newsletters and more.
